A Musician's Journey
Kralle Krawinkel grew up in Wilhelmshaven, Germany. His father was a sailor. Kralle's music journey began in the mid-1960s in a nearby town called Bremerhaven. He played guitar in a band called "The Vampyr".
Early Music Days
Later, Kralle joined forces with singer Stephan Remmler. They formed a band influenced by The Rolling Stones called MacBeats. This band was quite successful in Northern Germany. They even played for two weeks at the famous Star-Club in Hamburg. In 1969, MacBeats broke up. Kralle then started a new band called Cravinkel with some of his old bandmates, including Stephan Remmler. Cravinkel played folk and progressive rock music. They released two albums, but did not become widely famous. In 1972, Cravinkel also disbanded.
Forming Trio
After Cravinkel, Kralle worked as a teacher. But he still played guitar in several bands. In 1979, he teamed up again with his old bandmate Stephan Remmler. They wanted to get back into the music business. After a lot of practice, they formed the band Trio with drummer Peter Behrens.
In early 1980, Trio became one of the most famous bands of the Neue Deutsche Welle (German New Wave) music style. Stephan Remmler wrote most of the song lyrics. Kralle Krawinkel created the music for about half of Trio's songs.
Later Career and Life
In 1984, when Trio took a break, Kralle worked with another musician named Marius Müller-Westernhagen. Kralle played lead guitar in Marius's band. He was featured on the album "Die Sonne so rot" and went on tour in Germany. In 1986, the band Trio officially broke up.
In 1989, Kralle Krawinkel moved to Berlin. In 1993, he worked on a solo album called Kralle with his friend Wilfried Szyslo. Kralle had written the songs in English. But another friend, Rio Reiser, translated them into German. Kralle even sang a duet with the famous singer Nena on the single "'n Zentimeter Liebe".
In 1998, Kralle Krawinkel achieved a special record. He got an entry in the Guinness Book of Records for riding the longest distance by horse. He rode all the way from Seville, Spain, to Hamburg, Germany!
Later in life, Kralle had a private music studio near Seville. He also kept a home in Berlin. He mostly stayed out of the public eye. Kralle was married to television producer Monika Kölling. They had a son together. They met in 1985 while filming the Trio movie Drei gegen Drei.
Kralle Krawinkel passed away in Cuxhaven, Germany, on February 16, 2014, at the age of 66. He was buried at sea.
