Early Life and Education
Krishan Kant was born on 28 February 1927. His birthplace was a village called Kot Mohammad Khan in the Tarn Taran district of British India. His parents, Lala Achint Ram and Satyavati Devi, were both active in India's fight for freedom.
He studied at Banaras Hindu University, where he earned a Master of Science degree in Technology. After his studies, he worked as a scientist. He was part of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research in New Delhi.
Krishan Kant's Political Journey
Krishan Kant's journey into politics began early. As a student in Lahore, he joined the Quit India Movement. This was a major protest against British rule in India. He continued to be involved in the Indian independence movement as a young person.
Joining Parliament
Eventually, Krishan Kant was elected to the Parliament of India. He was known as part of the "Young Turk" group within the Indian National Congress party. This group consisted of young, energetic politicians.
He held many important roles within different political parties. These included the Indian National Congress, the Janata Party, and the Janata Dal. For many years, he was also a member of the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses. This institute studies topics related to India's defense.
Standing Up for Rights
Krishan Kant was a founding member of the People's Union for Civil Liberties and Democratic Rights. This group worked to protect people's freedoms. He was even removed from the Indian National Congress in 1975. This happened because he spoke out against the Emergency. The Emergency was a period when civil liberties were restricted in India.
He later became a member of the Lok Sabha, one of the two houses of India's Parliament. From 1972 to 1977, he led the Committee on Railway Reservations and Bookings.
Governor and Vice President
In 1989, Krishan Kant was appointed governor of Andhra Pradesh. He served in this role for seven years, which made him one of India's longest-serving governors. He held this position until he became the Vice President of India.
He was chosen as Vice President by the Parliament of India. He was the joint candidate of the Indian National Congress and the United Front. While he was Vice President, there was a terrorist attack on the Parliament building in 2001. Terrorists tried to gain access to the building.
Krishan Kant passed away in New Delhi on 27 July 2002, at the age of 75. He suffered a major heart attack. His death occurred just a few weeks before he was due to retire from his office. He is the only Indian Vice President to have died while still in office.
He was honored with a full state cremation in New Delhi. Many important people attended his funeral. He was survived by his wife, mother, children, grandchildren, and other family members. His mother, Satyavati Devi, who was also a freedom fighter, lived until 2010.
A few days after his passing, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was elected as the new Vice President.
