Krumbach's Location and Landscape
Krumbach covers an area of about 8.71 square kilometers. It's found in a region called "Vorderwald," which is part of the beautiful Bregenzerwald. Two rivers, the Weißach and the Bolgenach, flow through the village. You'll also find many special peat bogs here, which are a unique part of the landscape.
Krumbach is also part of a cool project called Naturpark Nagelfluhkette. This is a special nature park shared between Germany and Austria.
Krumbach's Culture and History
Krumbach has a rich culture, with interesting buildings and traditions.
St. Martin Parish Church
The main church in Krumbach is called St. Martin. Local builders finished it in 1806. Inside, the church has a beautiful Baroque style, with some parts added later in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Giessen Bridge
The Giessen Bridge is a wooden bridge built way back in 1792. It crosses over the Bolgenach river. Today, it's mostly used by hikers walking from Krumbach to Riefensberg.
Village Well
In 1999, Krumbach got a new village well, called a "Dorfbrunnen." It was designed by an artist named Herbert Meusburger. This well acts like a special gateway between the people of the village and the church.
Bregenzerwald Walking Tour
Krumbach is part of something called the Bregenzerwald Umgang, which means "Bregenzerwald Walking Tour." This tour lets you explore the architecture and community planning of 12 traditional villages in the Bregenzerwald area. As you walk, you can see different landscapes, public buildings, homes, and everyday items. This helps you understand the unique building styles of the Bregenzerwald throughout history. In Krumbach, the tour especially highlights the large peat bogs.
Unique Bus Stops
Krumbach is famous for its amazing bus stops! Seven different international artists designed them. In 2014, this project won special awards for its architecture and public relations.
The main bus stop in the village center was updated by local architects. Then, the Association Kultur Krumbach asked international designers to create seven new bus shelters for the surrounding area. They wanted the shelters to show off the strong local craftsmanship and use materials found in the region. Local craftspeople helped build them. The goal was to mix old traditions with new ideas. Over 300 people worked together on this project!
Here are some of the international architects who designed the bus stops:
- Alexander Brodsky (from Russia)
- Rintala Eggertsson Architects (from Norway)
- Architects de Vylder Vinck Taillieu (from Belgium)
- Ensamble Studio Antón García-Abril (from Spain)
- Smiljan Radic (from Chile)
- Sou Fujimoto (from Japan)
- Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu (from China)
