History of Riefensberg
The town of Riefensberg was first mentioned a very long time ago in 1249. It was called "rivinsperc" in an old document written by Pope Innocent IV.
Culture and Traditions
Riefensberg has a rich history and special traditions, especially when it comes to its churches and local crafts.
Important Churches
The St. Leonhard parish church is a very old building. It was first built in 1426. Over the years, it was made bigger between 1818 and 1821. Later, it was fixed up and made new again from 1969 to 1971.
Another important building is the St. Anna chapel. This chapel was built in the 1700s. It is known for its many beautiful Baroque statues, which are a type of art from that time.
The Auer Mill and Local Mills
In 2010, something interesting was found in Riefensberg: a very old millstone! This stone was about 300 years old and came from a place called the Auer Mill.
Long ago, from the 1600s to the 1800s, Riefensberg had several mills. These mills were used to grind grain. Today, the old grinding stone is displayed along a walking path for everyone to see.
Traditional Clothing: The Juppe
In Riefensberg, there is a special workshop called the Juppenwerkstatt Riefensberg. This is where traditional clothes from the Bregenz Forest region are still made. The most famous piece of clothing is the "Bregenzerwälder Juppe."
The Juppe is not sold in regular shops. Instead, it is custom-made for each person at the Juppenwerkstatt. Many women from the Bregenz Forest still wear the Juppe for special events like weddings or when they go to church on Sundays. It is a very important part of their local culture.
