Krystyna Janda (born December 18, 1952) is a famous Polish actress. She acts in both movies and plays. She is also a director and a singer. Many people know her for her roles in films by Polish director Andrzej Wajda. These include Man of Marble (1976) and Man of Iron (1981). She is seen as one of the most popular actresses from her time. She is also a big part of Polish cinema history.
In 1981, she acted in the movie Mephisto, which won an Academy Award. In 1982, she starred in Interrogation. This film was released later in 1989. Even with the delay, she won awards for her acting. She received the Best Actress Award at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival. She also won at the Polish Film Festival in 1990. Krystyna Janda also played a main role in the Dekalog series by Krzysztof Kieślowski. In 2020, she won the Polish Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Dolce Fine Giornata.
Her many awards include the Zbigniew Cybulski Award (1978). She also received the Gold Cross of Merit (1989). Other honors are the Gloria Artis Gold Medal (2005). She also got the Commander's Cross with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2011). In 2019, she won a Special Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival. People often call her a "legend" and a "national treasure" in Poland.

Life and Career
Krystyna Janda was born on December 18, 1952, in Starachowice, Poland. She went to the Wojciech Gerson State High School of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Later, she studied at the State Dramatic Arts College in Warsaw. She finished her studies in 1975.
Early Acting Roles
Her first acting job was in 1974. She played Maria Kulygina in the play Three Sisters. This play was shown on "Television Theatre." In the same year, she acted in a street play called The Ball of Mannequins. In 1976, she played Dorian Gray in a play based on The Picture of Dorian Gray. She worked as an actress at the Ateneum Theatre in Warsaw from 1976 to 1987.
Film Breakthrough
Krystyna Janda first appeared in a film in 1973. It was a TV series called Czarne chmury ("Black Clouds"). Her big break came in 1976. She played Agnieszka in Andrzej Wajda's film Man of Marble. She became known for playing strong women in her movies. These characters often had interesting and complex personalities. Besides Man of Marble, she is famous for roles in Man of Iron and Interrogation.
Singing and Directing
Krystyna Janda also started a singing career. Her first performance was in 1977. She sang "The Chewing Gum" at a festival in Opole. In the 1980s, she acted in many films and plays. She also began directing films and plays herself. In 1995, she directed the film Pestka. This movie was based on a novel by Anka Kowalska.

Founding Theatres
In 2005, she opened her own private theatre in Warsaw. It is called the Polonia Theater. She also started the Krystyna Janda Cultural Foundation. In 2010, her foundation opened another theatre in Warsaw. It is called the Och-Teatr. She has also written columns for magazines. She helps a foundation that promotes the work of poet Agnieszka Osiecka. In 2019, she won an award at the Sundance Film Festival for her acting in Dolce Fine Giornata.
Personal Life
Krystyna Janda was married to actor Andrzej Seweryn from 1974 to 1979. In 1981, she married Edward Kłosiński. He passed away in 2008. She has three children: a daughter named Maria Seweryn and two sons, Adam and Jędrzej Kłosiński. She is a Lutheran. Krystyna Janda lives in Milanówek, which is near Warsaw.
