Krystyna Zachwatowicz-Wajda (born Krystyna Zachwatowicz on May 16, 1930) is a talented Polish artist. She is known for designing sets and costumes for plays and movies. She is also an actress. Krystyna is the daughter of a famous architect, Jan Zachwatowicz. She was married to the well-known film director, Andrzej Wajda. She is also a member of the Polish Film Academy.
Krystyna Zachwatowicz-Wajda helped create the Manggha Centre of Japanese Art and Technology in Kraków. She did this with her husband, Andrzej Wajda. This center is a special place that shares Japanese culture and art.
Krystyna's Life and Work
Krystyna Zachwatowicz was born in Warsaw, Poland, on May 16, 1930. She studied art history at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. Later, she went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków to learn about scenography. Scenography is the art of designing and arranging the sets for a play or film.
In 1958, Krystyna started her career as a scenographer. Her first work was for a play called Rzymska kurtyzana in Sosnowiec. In 1960, she moved to Sosnowiec. There, she worked with a student theater group. She designed the sets for a play called The Marriage. This play was directed by Jerzy Jarocki.
Krystyna worked with Jerzy Jarocki on other theater shows too. These included The Mother (in 1964 and 1972) and The Shoemakers (in 1971). These plays were shown at The Old Theatre in Kraków.
At The Old Theatre, she also designed sets for plays directed by Konrad Swinarski. Some of these were The Un-Divine Comedy (1965) and A Midsummer Night's Dream (1970). She also worked on plays directed by her husband, Andrzej Wajda. These included November Night (1974), Crime and Punishment (1984), and Hamlet IV (1989).
From 1958 to the 1970s, Krystyna was also an actress. She performed at Kraków's Piwnica pod Baranami. She also worked with other theaters in Poland. These included The Groteska Puppet, Mask and Actor Theatre, and The Ludowy Theatre in Kraków. She also worked with the Dramatyczny Theatre and Polish Theatre in Warsaw. In Wrocław, she worked with the Polish Theatre.
Awards and Recognition
Krystyna Zachwatowicz-Wajda has received many awards for her amazing work:
- 1994: She received the Silver Medal Cracoviae Marenti. This was for her help in founding the Manggha center in Kraków. She shared this award with Andrzej Wajda and Karolina Lanckorońska.
- 1995: She won the Golden Laurel of Przekrój. This was for her work on "the second Japan" (the Manggha center). She shared this award with Andrzej Wajda.
- 1999: She was given the Knight's Cross of The Order of Polonia Restituta. This is a very important Polish award.
- 2003: She was nominated for a Polish Film Award. This was for Best Costume Design for the film The Revenge. She was nominated with Magdalena Biedrzycka.
