Krystyna Zachwatowicz-Wajda, born Krystyna Zachwatowicz on May 16, 1930, is a talented Polish artist. She is known for designing sets and costumes for plays and movies. She also worked as an actress. Her father was Jan Zachwatowicz, a famous architect. She was married to the well-known film director Andrzej Wajda. She is also a member of the Polish Film Academy.

Krystyna Zachwatowicz-Wajda helped create the Manggha Centre of Japanese Art and Technology in Kraków. She started this important center with her husband, Andrzej Wajda.

Early Life and Education

Krystyna Zachwatowicz was born in Warsaw, Poland, on May 16, 1930. She studied at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. There, she learned about the history of art, graduating in 1952. Later, she continued her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. She focused on scenography, which is the art of designing stage sets. She finished this program in 1958.

Career in Theatre Design

In 1958, Krystyna Zachwatowicz began her career as a scenographer. Her first project was for a play called Rzymska kurtyzana in Sosnowiec. In 1960, she moved to Sosnowiec. She worked with a student theatre group there. She designed the sets for a play called The Marriage.

Working with Famous Directors

Krystyna Zachwatowicz often worked with famous theatre directors. She designed sets for many plays directed by Jerzy Jarocki. These included The Mother and The Shoemakers. She also created designs for plays directed by Konrad Swinarski. Some of these were The Un-Divine Comedy and A Midsummer Night's Dream.

She also worked closely with her husband, Andrzej Wajda. She designed sets for his plays at The Old Theatre in Kraków. These included November Night, Crime and Punishment, and Hamlet IV. Her work helped bring these stories to life on stage.

Acting Career

From 1958 into the 1970s, Krystyna Zachwatowicz was also an actress. She performed at the famous Piwnica pod Baranami cabaret in Kraków. She was known for playing a special character there. She also worked with other theatres across Poland. These included The Groteska Puppet, Mask and Actor Theatre and The Ludowy Theatre in Kraków. She also performed at the Dramatyczny Theatre and Polish Theatre in Warsaw. In Wrocław, she worked with the Polish Theatre.

Awards and Recognition

Krystyna Zachwatowicz-Wajda has received several awards for her contributions to art and culture.

  • 1994: She received the Silver Medal Cracoviae Marenti. This award was for her work in Kraków. It recognized her role in founding the Manggha Centre. She shared this honor with Andrzej Wajda and Karolina Lanckorońska.
  • 1995: She was given the Golden Laurel of Przekrój. This award was for creating "the second Japan" with Andrzej Wajda.
  • 1999: She was honored with the Knight's Cross of The Order of Polonia Restituta. This is a high Polish award.
