In Hinduism, Vishnu is one of the most important gods. He is known as the preserver and protector of the universe. Sometimes, Vishnu appears in different forms or aspects to help manage the universe and its living beings.

Understanding Vishnu

Vishnu is a central figure in Hinduism, especially in a tradition called Vaishnavism. People who follow Vaishnavism believe Vishnu is the Supreme Being. He is often shown with blue skin and four arms, holding a conch shell, a discus, a mace, and a lotus flower. These items represent his power and ability to maintain order in the cosmos.

The Three Forms of Vishnu

Ancient scriptures, like the Sātvata-tantra, describe Vishnu appearing in three main forms. These forms help him manage the vast universe and all living things within it. Each form has a special role in creation, maintenance, and the connection with living beings.

Mahavishnu: The Creator of Universes

The first form is Mahavishnu. He is considered the source of all material universes. Imagine countless bubbles floating in a vast ocean; each bubble is a universe. Mahavishnu is believed to create these universes by breathing them out. He rests in a cosmic ocean, and from his body, countless universes emerge.

Garbhodakśayī-Viṣṇu: The Universe's Inner Soul

Inside each of these universes, there is another form of Vishnu called Garbhodakśayī-Viṣṇu. He lies on a cosmic ocean within each universe. From his navel, a lotus flower grows, and on this lotus, Brahma (the creator god) is born. Garbhodakśayī-Viṣṇu supports and maintains everything within that specific universe. He is like the soul of each individual universe.

Kṣīrodakaśāyī Vishnu: The Soul Within Us All

The third form is Kṣīrodakaśāyī Vishnu. He is the most personal form of Vishnu, living very close to us. Kṣīrodakaśāyī Vishnu lives inside the heart of every single living creature. He is often described as having four hands, similar to Mahavishnu. His home is within all beings, connecting him directly to every living thing.

What is Paramātmā?

Kṣīrodakaśāyī Vishnu is also known as the Paramātmā, or the Supersoul. The Supersoul is like a tiny part of God that lives inside each of us. It guides us and watches over our actions. Even though we have our own individual souls, the Supersoul is always present, observing and helping us. It is a witness to everything we do and think. This concept shows how Vishnu is not just far away in the cosmos but also intimately connected to our daily lives.
