History of the Dragons
The Kuala Lumpur Dragons team started in 2009. At first, they were simply called the KL Dragons. Later, they got a sponsor named Westports. Because of this, their name changed to the Westports KL Dragons.
Before the 2012 season, their name changed again to the Westports Malaysia Dragons. This team has done well in the ABL. They reached the semi-finals four times in their first four seasons. However, they lost each time. They lost to the Philippine Patriots twice. Then, they lost to the San Miguel Beermen and the Indonesia Warriors.
In the 2014 season, the Dragons finally made it to the ABL finals! But they lost to Hi-Tech Bangkok City.
The Dragons also played in the 2011 FIBA Asia Champions Cup. This is a big basketball tournament in Asia. They got to play because the champions, Chang Thailand Slammers, couldn't make it. Sadly, the KL Dragons did not win any games in this tournament.
The team had a great season in 2015–16. They won the ASEAN Basketball League championship! This win allowed them to play in the 2016 FIBA Asia Champions Cup. They also played in the 2016 PBA D-League Foundation Cup as the Blustar Detergent Dragons. Just like in 2011, they didn't win any games in the 2016 FIBA Asia Champions Cup.
For the 2019–20 ABL season, the team went back to its original name: the Kuala Lumpur Dragons.
