A Look Back in Time
Kudardup has an interesting history, especially linked to the timber industry and farming.
Early Days and Timber
Back in 1883, a man named M. C. Davies started a timber mill here. It was called Koodardup Mill. Its purpose was to use the wood from the huge karri forests nearby. However, the mill moved to Karridale just one year later. Around this time, the name "Coodardup Caves" was also used for nearby caves.
Farming and Settlement
In 1921, the Kudardup area became part of the Group Settlement Scheme. This was a plan to help people settle and farm the land. Later, in 1925, a stopping place for trains was built here on the Flinders Bay branch railway. The spelling of the name was officially changed to "Kudardup" in 1926.
During the 1940s and 1950s, Kudardup was part of the War Service Land Settlement Scheme. This scheme helped soldiers returning from war get land for farming. Many successful dairy farms were set up during this time. Kudardup was officially recognized as a townsite in 1957.
Facing Challenges
In March 1961, Kudardup faced a big challenge. The area was badly damaged by bushfires. These fires caused a lot of destruction.
