The Kulnura wattle (its scientific name is Acacia kulnurensis) is a special type of Acacia tree or shrub. It grows naturally in eastern Australia. It is known for its pretty yellow flowers and interesting leaves.

What it Looks Like

This plant can be a shrub or a small tree. It usually grows up to 4 meters (about 13 feet) tall. Its branches hang down and have long ridges. They can be a little bit hairy or very hairy.

Its leaves are quite interesting! Each leaf is made up of smaller parts. It has 3 to 13 pairs of main leaflets, called pinnae, which are 0.5 to 4.5 centimeters long. These main leaflets then have even smaller leaflets, called pinnules. There are 4 to 15 pairs of these tiny pinnules. They are shaped like a stretched oval and curve slightly backwards. Each pinnule is 2.5 to 8.5 centimeters long and 0.8 to 4 millimeters wide.

Flowers and Seeds

The Kulnura wattle blooms with yellow flowers between March and September. Its flowers grow in groups called inflorescences. These groups are round and loosely packed. They have 5 to 11 cream to pale yellow flowers in each ball-shaped head. These flower clusters grow along a stem that can be up to 29 centimeters long.

After the flowers, seed pods start to form between September and December. These pods are tough and can be brown, brownish-black, or purplish-black. They are usually straight but sometimes squeeze in between the seeds. The pods are 3 to 13 centimeters long and 11 to 17 millimeters wide.

Where it Grows

The Kulnura wattle grows in a small area on the central coast of New South Wales in Australia. You can mostly find it in places like Kulnura, Bucketty, and Mangrove Mountain. It also grows a bit further north into the Hunter Valley area, near towns like Kurri Kurri and Cessnock.

This wattle usually lives on ridges and higher parts of hills. It likes to grow near sandstone rocks. It is often found in dry sclerophyll woodlands or forests. These are types of forests where trees have tough, hard leaves that can handle dry conditions.
