Begum Kulsoom Nawaz Sharif (born March 29, 1948 – died September 11, 2018) was an important Pakistani politician. She served as the First Lady of Pakistan three times. These terms were from 1990 to 1993, 1997 to 1999, and 2013 to 2017. She was also the President of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) political party from 1999 to 2002.
Early Life and Family
Kulsoom Nawaz was born in Lahore, Pakistan, on March 29, 1948. Her family was known as the Punjabi Butt family.
She went to Islamia College and then to Forman Christian College in Lahore. In 1970, she earned a master's degree in Urdu from the University of the Punjab.
Kulsoom had two sisters and one brother. Her grandfather on her mother's side was The Great Gama, a famous wrestler. In April 1970, she married Nawaz Sharif. He later became the Prime Minister of Pakistan three times. They had four children together: Maryam, Asma, Hassan, and Hussain.
Her Role as First Lady
Kulsoom first became the First Lady of Pakistan in November 1990. This happened when her husband, Nawaz Sharif, became Prime Minister. His first time as Prime Minister ended in July 1993.
She became First Lady again in 1997. Her husband's party, Pakistan Muslim League (N), won the election. This second term ended in October 1999 due to political changes. During this time, Kulsoom showed great courage. Her daughter, Maryam Nawaz, said that Kulsoom "bravely challenged" difficult situations.
Nawaz Sharif named his wife the President of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) in 1999. In 2000, she led a public gathering from Lahore to Peshawar. She wanted to gain support for her political party. Police stopped her car and detained her soon after she left her home. She remained the party president until 2002.
She became the First Lady for the third time in 2013. This was after Nawaz Sharif's party won another election.
Political Career
Kulsoom Nawaz was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan in September 2017. She won a special election in the NA-120 area of Lahore. She received many votes, defeating her opponent. This seat became available after her husband, Nawaz Sharif, faced legal issues.
Sadly, she was unable to take her oath as a member of the National Assembly. This was because she became very ill. She was known for keeping a quiet public profile.
