Kungälv Municipality (Kungälvs kommun) is a special area in western Sweden. It's like a local government region, and its main town is Kungälv. This municipality is home to over 50,000 people, making it one of the larger ones in Sweden!

The way Kungälv Municipality is set up today started in 1971. Back then, it combined the old City of Kungälv, the City of Marstrand, and parts of four smaller rural areas. A few years later, in 1974, a small piece of land on the island of Hisingen moved to be part of Gothenburg Municipality.
