Stenungsund Municipality (which in Swedish is Stenungsunds kommun) is a local government area, called a municipality, in western Sweden. It is part of Västra Götaland County. The main town and administrative center, known as its seat, is Stenungsund.
This municipality is located by the sea, nestled among the islands of Orust and Tjörn. Important routes like the European route E6 highway and the Bohus Line railway pass through it. There are three train stops within the municipality: Stora Höga, Stenungsund, and Svenshögen.
The municipality was created in 1952 when several smaller areas joined together. Later, in 1971, another area was added.
