A Look Back: Stenungsund's History

Stenungsund is a very important center for the chemical industry in Sweden. It produces basic chemicals and materials used to make plastic.

The name Stenungsund comes from an old village called "Stenunge." This village was located where the center of Stenungsund is today. Historians believe the name "Stenunge" meant "the village at the foot of the mountain." Over time, the village had a few different names, like Staenungum and Steffningsbyn, before it became Stännung.

On September 23, 2023, a quick clay landslide happened near the E6 highway. This event caused damage to the motorway, a local road, a fuel station, and a fast-food restaurant. A shop selling wood and building materials also lost its access to the road network. After nine months of hard work, the E6 motorway was repaired and reopened on July 5, 2024.
