Kuniwo Nakamura (born November 24, 1943 – died October 14, 2020) was an important leader from Palau. He served as the President of Palau for two terms, from 1993 to 2001. Before becoming president, he was the Vice President of Palau from 1989 to 1993.
Early Life and Education
Kuniwo Nakamura was born in Peleliu, a part of Palau. His father was from Japan, and his mother was the daughter of a Palauan chief. When he was a young boy, World War II ended. He was in his second year of primary school at that time.
After the war, Palau was under the control of the United States. Kuniwo Nakamura finished high school during this time. He then went to college at the University of Hawaii to continue his studies.
Political Career
Kuniwo Nakamura started his journey in politics when he was 28 years old. He became the youngest person ever elected to the Congress of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. This was a big step in his career.
He served as the Vice President of Palau from January 1989 to January 1993. After that, he decided to run for president.
In the 1992 election, he won the presidency. He was re-elected in 1996, showing that the people of Palau trusted him to lead. He served two full terms as president.
Kuniwo Nakamura did not run for president again in the 2000 election. Instead, he supported his vice president, Tommy Remengesau, who then won the election.
