Most people in Kurigram speak Bengali, which is the main language of Bangladesh. Some people also know how to speak English. You will find more English speakers in the city areas compared to the villages.
How People Make a Living
For a very long time, farming has been the main way people earn money in Kurigram. The most important crops grown here are:
- Rice
- Jute (often called the "golden fiber" of Bangladesh)
- Wheat
- Tobacco
- Potatoes
During the dry winter season, the water level in the ground goes down. Farmers use special irrigation systems to water their fields. This helps them grow many types of rice. There are also cold storage facilities in the district. These places keep farm products, especially potatoes, fresh during the hot summer months. This helps the local economy.
Food in Kurigram
Just like in other parts of Bangladesh, people in Kurigram commonly eat rice and vegetable dishes. Meat and fish curries are also very popular. Many different kinds of fresh water fish are found here. These fish are usually caught from the rivers that flow through the district.
People often celebrate different seasons with special foods. For example, in winter, you can enjoy the sweet juice from a date tree.
