Kurrawang is a small town in Western Australia. It is located in the Goldfields–Esperance region. You can find it between the towns of Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. It's also very close to the Great Eastern Highway.

Kurrawang's Early Days

Kurrawang started as a railway station in the early 1900s. It was part of the main railway line that went to Kalgoorlie. This area was also a busy meeting point for special timber railway lines.

Timber and Water Supply

Companies used these timber lines to collect firewood. This firewood was very important. It provided the heat energy needed for machines called condensers. Condensers were used to turn salty water into fresh, drinkable water. This was a clever way to get water in a dry area.

Becoming a Town

The people living in Kurrawang wanted their settlement to become a proper town. In 1907, they all agreed to form a "progress association." This group worked to improve the town. A committee was chosen at the same meeting. Kurrawang was officially recognized as a town in 1910.

What's in a Name?

The name "Kurrawang" comes from the language of the Aboriginal Australians. However, what the name actually means is not known for sure. Some people think it might be connected to a type of bird that has a similar name.
