History of Kurrawang
Kurrawang has a rich history that shows how the community has changed over time. It started as a special settlement for Aboriginal people.
Early Days and Missions
Kurrawang began as a mission settlement in 1953. It was set up on land owned by the government. A mission settlement was a place where religious groups helped Aboriginal people.
During the 1960s, dormitories were built for children. These were large rooms where many children slept.
Changes in Housing and Control
In the 1970s, the community made a big change. The dormitories were replaced with separate houses. This gave families their own homes.
A very important change happened in 1984. The community took control from the mission. A group of local people, called an executive committee, started making decisions for Kurrawang. This meant the community could guide its own future.
Owning Their Land
In March 1995, the Kurrawang Aboriginal Christian Community received the title to their land. This meant they now owned the land outright. This was a huge step for the community, giving them more independence and security.
Community Planning
Kurrawang has a special plan for how the community will grow and develop. This plan helps make sure Kurrawang is a good place to live now and in the future.
What is a Layout Plan?
The community uses something called a "Layout Plan." Think of it like a map and a rulebook for how the town is organized. It shows where houses, roads, and other important buildings can go.
Kurrawang's Layout Plan No.2 was created following rules from the state government. The community agreed on this plan in 2006. The Western Australian Planning Commission, which is a government group that plans how land is used, also approved it. This plan helps guide how Kurrawang will develop in a way that benefits everyone.
