Minin's Early Life and Role
Kuzma Minin was born in a town called Balakhna. He became a successful butcher in Nizhny Novgorod. During this time, Russia was going through a period called the "Time of Troubles." There was no clear ruler, and foreign armies were invading.
Organizing the Volunteer Army
Many people wanted to help defend their country. A patriotic movement started in Nizhny Novgorod to create a volunteer army. The merchants in the city trusted Minin very much. They chose him to manage the money that people donated to raise this army. This group was called the Second Volunteer Army.
Leading the Fight
Minin worked closely with Prince Pozharsky. Minin was in charge of the money and making sure the army had what it needed. Prince Pozharsky led the soldiers in battle.
In November 1612, their army marched to Moscow. They fought bravely and successfully removed the Polish forces from the Moscow Kremlin. This was a huge victory for Russia.
Becoming a Nobleman
After this great success, Minin was recognized for his leadership. He was made a nobleman and became a member of the boyar duma. This was a high-ranking government council under the new ruler, Tsar Michael Romanov.
Kuzma Minin died in 1616. He was buried in the Archangel Cathedral in Nizhny Novgorod. Today, a main square in that city is named after him and Prince Pozharsky.
Minin's Family
Kuzma Minin had one son named Nefed. After Minin passed away, his property went to his wife, Tatyana Semyonovna, and his son.
Nefed Minin
Nefed Minin owned property in the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. He also worked as a government clerk in Moscow. Records show him attending important events in 1625 and 1626. However, he is not mentioned in official records after 1628. Nefed died in 1632.
Tatyana Semyonovna
Tatyana Minin, Kuzma's wife, continued to live in Nizhny Novgorod. It is believed that when she was older, she became a nun. She likely joined the Resurrection Convent, which was inside the city's Kremlin.
