Kyra Minturn Sedgwick (born August 19, 1965) is an American actress, director, and producer. She is famous for playing Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson in the crime drama The Closer. This role earned her a Golden Globe in 2007 and an Emmy Award in 2010.
Kyra also starred in the 1992 TV movie Miss Rose White, which won an Emmy Award. She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her role in the 1995 film Something to Talk About. You might also know her from movies like Born on the Fourth of July (1989) and Singles (1992). She also had a fun role as Madeline Wuntch in the TV show Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Early Life and Education
Kyra Sedgwick was born in New York City on August 19, 1965. Her mother, Patricia, was a speech teacher. Her father, Henry Dwight Sedgwick V, was a venture capitalist. Her parents separated when she was four years old. They divorced when she was six.
Kyra has a brother, Robert Sedgwick, who is also an actor. She also has a half-brother, jazz guitarist Mike Stern. Kyra went to Friends Seminary school. She later studied theater at the University of Southern California.
Kyra Sedgwick's Acting Career
Kyra Sedgwick started acting in 1982. Her first role was on the TV soap opera Another World. She played Julia Shearer. In 1989, she appeared in the Oscar-winning movie Born on the Fourth of July.
Movies and TV Shows
In 1992, Kyra played the main character in the Emmy Award-winning TV movie Miss Rose White. This film was about a Jewish immigrant. During the 1990s, she was in many Hollywood movies. These included Singles (1992) and Heart and Souls (1993). She also starred in Something to Talk About (1995). For this role, she was nominated for a Golden Globe.
Kyra also appeared in Phenomenon (1996). In this movie, she played the love interest of John Travolta's character. She has also acted alongside her husband, Kevin Bacon, in several films. These include Pyrates (1991), The Woodsman (2004), The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (2022), and The Best You Can (2025). Kyra Sedgwick married actor Kevin Bacon on September 4, 1988. They met while working on a TV show called Lemon Sky. They have two children together: Travis Sedgwick Bacon and actress Sosie Bacon. The family divides their time between New York City and their farm in Connecticut.
