L. Scott Caldwell (born Laverne Scott in 1950) is an American actress. She is well-known for her roles as Deputy U.S. Marshall Erin Poole in the movie The Fugitive (1993) and as Rose on the TV show Lost.

Early Life and Education
Laverne Scott grew up in Chicago, Illinois. She was the middle child in her family. When she was young, she went to school in the mornings. After school, a friend of her mother's would look after her at a local theater. This might have been where her love for acting began!
While attending Hyde Park High School, she joined the drama club. She saw a play called A Day of Absence, which featured professional Black actors. This was a big moment for her. After high school, she went to Northwestern University. She later transferred to Loyola University-Chicago and earned a degree in Theater Arts and Communications.
Acting Career
Caldwell first planned to be a teacher and even taught at a performing arts high school in Chicago. She also worked for the Chicago Council on Fine Arts. While in Chicago, she performed in many local plays.
In 1978, Caldwell moved to New York to try out for acting schools. She joined The Negro Ensemble Company, a famous theater group. During her first year there, she acted in several plays. One of these plays, Home, even went to Broadway in 1980. Broadway is the highest level of theater in the United States.
In 1984, Caldwell was in an accident and couldn't work for almost two years. After she recovered, she auditioned for a play called Joe Turner's Come and Gone. Her performance in this play was amazing, and she won a Tony Award in 1988. A Tony Award is one of the most important awards for theater actors.
After winning the Tony, she moved to California to work in television and movies. She has been very busy, acting in many different cities and countries. She also continued to perform in plays. In 1997, she returned to Broadway in a play called Proposals.
In 2006, Caldwell performed in The Dreams of Sarah Breedlove. In 2011, she played Lena Younger in a classic play called A Raisin in the Sun. She won an award for her performance in this play. More recently, she was part of the PBS TV series Mercy Street from 2016 to 2017.
Caldwell has also been active in the Screen Actors Guild, which is a union for actors. She has served on their board of directors, helping to represent actors and their interests.
Personal Life
L. Scott Caldwell has a son named Ominara. She was married to John Caldwell, and later to artist Dasal Banks in 2004. Sadly, Banks passed away in 2005. Caldwell finished his last film, a documentary about prostate cancer, to help raise awareness.
Caldwell often gives talks and joins discussions about African American actors. She has participated in events honoring famous playwrights like August Wilson. She also helps direct staged readings of plays.
