LAM Mozambique Airlines Flight 470 was a regular international flight. It flew from Maputo, Mozambique, to Luanda, Angola. On November 29, 2013, the plane crashed. It went down in Bwabwata National Park in northern Namibia.
The plane's wreckage was found the next day. Sadly, all 27 passengers and six crew members died. Later investigations showed that the pilot, Herminio dos Santos Fernandes, intentionally caused the aircraft to crash.
People from several countries were on board. All crew members and ten passengers were from Mozambique. Nine passengers were from Angola. Five were from Portugal, one from France, one from Brazil, and one from China.
The Aircraft
The plane involved in the crash was an Embraer 190. Its tail number was C9-EMC. This type of aircraft is a popular jet used for medium-range flights. The plane was named "Chaimite."
The Flight Path
The flight began at Maputo International Airport in Maputo, Mozambique. Its destination was Quatro de Fevereiro Airport in Luanda, Angola. The crash happened far into the flight, over Namibia.
The Investigation
Investigators worked to find out why the plane crashed. They looked at the flight recorders, often called "black boxes." These boxes record cockpit sounds and flight data. The investigation concluded that the pilot, Herminio dos Santos Fernandes, was responsible for the crash.
