Discovering Blanquilla Island

Where is Blanquilla?

Blanquilla Island is part of Venezuela, a country in South America. It's located far out in the Caribbean Sea. This island is actually the top part of a large underwater mountain range called the Aves Ridge. This ridge sticks out of the water in a few places, forming several islands.

The island itself covers an area of about 64.53 square kilometers (24.9 square miles). It's not a very big island, but it's full of interesting things to see!

Amazing Wildlife and Nature

Blanquilla is home to unique plants and animals. You can find local cacti growing there, which are plants that can survive in dry places. The island also has iguanas, which are large lizards.

You might even spot some feral donkeys and goats roaming freely on the island. These animals have lived on Blanquilla for a long time.

Diving and Beaches

The clear waters around Blanquilla are perfect for diving. Divers love to explore the reefs here because they are home to special black coral. This type of coral is very unique and is sometimes used to make jewelry and other crafts.

The white sand beaches are also a major attraction. They are perfect for relaxing, swimming, and enjoying the peaceful island environment.

Island Stories

In 2014, there were some stories in the news about Blanquilla Island. Some media in Hong Kong suggested that Venezuela might give ownership of the island to China. This was supposedly in exchange for China forgiving a large debt of $50 billion that Venezuela owed.

However, the Chinese government quickly said that these stories were not true. They denied that there were any plans to transfer ownership of Blanquilla Island. So, the island remains a part of Venezuela.
