La Gaceta de México was a newspaper written in Spanish. It was published in New Spain, which is now Mexico. This newspaper first came out in 1722. This makes it the very first newspaper ever published in Hispanic America. It was started by Juan Ignacio María de Castorena Ursúa y Goyeneche. He was a journalist, a Catholic priest, and later became a Bishop in Yucatan. He is known as the first journalist in Latin America. He created this newspaper in Mexico City. The first issue was printed on January 1, 1722.
The Story of La Gaceta
In the 1700s, a new type of publication appeared. It was called a gazette. These gazettes aimed to share news from Europe and the local area. They also reported on ships arriving and leaving. And they announced important public notices. Some other important gazettes in New Spain were El Mercurio Volante and Gaceta de Literatura de México.
The First Gaceta de México
The first version was called Gazeta de México y noticias de Nueva España. It used a "z" in its name. This was to honor the Italian spelling of the word "gazette." Each issue had eight pages. Six issues were published under this name until June 1722. After the fourth issue, its name changed slightly. It became Gazeta de México y florilegio historial de las noticias de Nueva España.
The main goal of this newspaper was to record important events. It wanted to share the most notable news of the day. The editor wanted to give this information to the public. It also aimed to spread European ideas and customs. This was part of the Bourbon dynasty's plan.
The Gaceta de México was the first newspaper in Hispanic America. But in North America, Publick Occurrences came out earlier. Its only issue was published in Boston on September 25, 1690. After La Gaceta de México, other newspapers started in Spanish America. They followed the example of the Gaceta de Madrid. These included the Gazeta de Guatemala (1729) and the Gazeta de Lima (1743).
Later Versions of the Newspaper
The first Gaceta de México stopped publishing after six months. But a few years later, a new newspaper with the same name appeared. It started on January 1, 1728. This version had four pages per issue. Its editor was Juan Francisco Sahagún y Arévalo Ladrón de Guevara. This second Gaceta lasted until December 1739. It published a total of 145 issues.
There was also a third Gaceta de México. This one was a collection of news from New Spain. It began on January 14, 1784. It stopped publishing on January 2, 1810. This version was edited by Manuel Antonio Valdés y Munguía. He was a Creole printer. This third Gaceta was the longest-running newspaper during the time of the viceroys in Mexico.
