The town of La Jagua was officially founded in 1771. It was founded by a Spanish person named Juan Ramon de Ibirico. This is where the "Ibirico" part of the name comes from.

Becoming a Municipality

Coal Mining Development

In 1985, people started to mine coal in a simple way. However, they did not have much experience. So, the results were not very good at first. By 1990, the government-supported company Carbocol began to give permits to mining companies. This helped the coal industry grow much bigger.
