La Ligua (pronounced "la LEE-gwa") is a city and commune in Chile. It is the main city of Petorca Province in the Valparaíso Region. La Ligua is famous for its textile factories and tasty traditional Chilean pastries.
Life in La Ligua: People and Places
La Ligua is home to many people. In 2002, about 31,987 people lived there. Most of them, around 24,214, lived in the city areas. The rest, about 7,773 people, lived in the countryside. There were slightly more men than women living in La Ligua at that time.
How La Ligua is Governed
La Ligua is a commune, which is a local government area in Chile. It is managed by a group called the communal council. The leader of the commune is a mayor, who is chosen by the people every four years. From 2008 to 2012, Rodrigo Sánchez Villalobos was the mayor.
La Ligua is also part of a larger area for elections. It belongs to the 10th electoral district and the 5th senatorial area in Chile. This helps decide who represents the people in the government.
