How La Torre Got Its Name
The name "La Torre de Esteban Hambrán" means "The Tower of Esteban Hambrán" in English. It likely comes from an old Muslim tower. This tower once belonged to a nobleman named Esteban ben Ambrán.
He was a Mozarab, which means a Christian living under Muslim rule. The tower was used to send messages using fire signals. These signals could reach the distant Castle of Alamín.
A Look Back: La Torre's History
Early Beginnings: Roman Times
The town was first settled by the Romans way back in 171 BC. However, we don't know much about what life was like during the Roman period in this village.
After the Reconquista
After the Reconquista (when Christian kingdoms took back Spain from Muslim rule), more people started living around the "Esteban Hambrán" tower. In the early 1400s, the land belonged to a person named Pero López de Ayala.
Later, in 1436, the village was bought by Álvaro de Luna. Some years after that, John II of Castile took the village for the crown. This meant it became property of the king.
