It is considered precursor of the pictoresque novel by elements like the realism, the narration in first person, the itinerant structure, the service to several masters and the moralistic and pessimistic ideas
Guide of Tormes is an ironic and merciless outline of the society of the moment, of which show his vices and attitudes hipócritas, especially the ones of the clergymen and religious. There is different hypothesis on his authorship. Probably the author was simpatizante of the ideas erasmistas. This motivated that the Inquisition forbade it and that, later, allowed his publication, once expurgada. The work did not go back to be published entirely until the century XIX
