Exploring Geneva Township's Communities
Lacota: A Historic Spot
Lacota is a small, unincorporated community found in the northern part of Geneva Township. It is located on 60th Street. Some people living in nearby Lee and Casco townships also consider themselves part of the Lacota community.
Lacota has its own post office, which offers PO Box services. The first European settler, Clark Pierce, arrived here in 1837. When the community was officially mapped out in 1870 by Enoch M. Pease, it was first named Irvington. This name honored Pierce's son, Irving.
A post office named "West Geneva" opened in the area on May 20, 1864. Jerome B. Watson was its first postmaster. The post office name was changed to Irvington on June 2, 1874. Later, on December 22, 1884, it was changed again to Lacota. This change happened because the Michigan Central Railroad already served a town named Irving in another county. The name Lacota was suggested by V. D. Dilley. He got the idea from a character in a novel his father was reading.
