A Look Back: The Story of Lacy Lakeview
Lacy Lakeview started as two separate communities. Later, a third community joined them.
The older community was called Lacy. It was named after William David Lacy, who sold land there in the 1880s. The other community, Lakeview, got its name because it was close to lakes fed by springs. Lakeview was also where the school for both communities was located. Both Lacy and Lakeview were stops on the Texas Electric Railway. This railway, also known as the Interurban, connected Dallas and Waco.
Neither town grew very quickly at first. By the 1940s, the total number of people in both communities was only about 120. There were also just four businesses.
In 1953, the two communities decided to join together and form one city government. After this, the population of the new combined city grew fast. By the early 1960s, over 2,000 people lived there. The city's economy mostly depended on the nearby city of Waco.
In 1998, another city called Northcrest merged with Lacy Lakeview. This merger helped the larger area become a "home rule" city under Texas law. This means it has more power to make its own local laws.
