History of Ladera Ranch
Ladera Ranch is a planned community that covers about 4,000 acres (16 square kilometers). It is surrounded by the cities of Mission Viejo, San Juan Capistrano, and Rancho Santa Margarita.
Building of the community started in 1999. It was built on land that used to be part of a very large cattle ranch. This ranch, called Rancho Mission Viejo, was one of the biggest working ranches in Orange County.
Geography and Location
Ladera Ranch is found in the hills of the Orange County Saddleback area. It shares borders with Rancho Mission Viejo to the south. To the north, it is next to Las Flores. The city of Mission Viejo is to its west.
How Ladera Ranch Was Designed
The Ladera Ranch community is divided into nine main sections, which are called "villages." Each village has many smaller areas called neighborhoods. Different builders create homes in these neighborhoods.
The nine villages are:
- Oak Knoll Village
- Bridgepark
- Flintridge Village
- Township
- Wycliffe Village
- Echo Ridge Village
- Avendale Villages
- Terramor Village
- Covenant Hills
Four of these villages have special clubhouses. Each clubhouse has a unique architectural style that matches the homes in its village. All villages also have parks, swimming pools, playgrounds, and open green spaces.
The Covenant Hills village is a special area that is gated. This means only residents of Ladera Ranch with a special card can enter it. The other villages in Ladera Ranch do not have gates.
Besides the clubhouses, the community offers many fun places. There is a private water park and a skate park. You can also find 18 community parks and a dog park. There are six smaller pools in different neighborhoods. Ladera Ranch has many small parks and green areas. There are also two shopping areas called Mercantile East and Mercantile West. Miles of trails are available for hiking and biking, and these trails connect to Doheny Beach.
