As a teenager, he moved to the United States to play at a higher level. He settled in Miami, Florida, and went to Miami Jackson Senior High School. Mychal Thompson's NBA Career
The Portland Trail Blazers chose Mychal Thompson as the first player in the 1978 NBA draft. This made him the first player born outside the U.S. to be picked first overall.
Playing for the Portland Trail Blazers
Thompson played for the Portland Trail Blazers for eight years. He played both power forward and center. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie team in 1978. One of his best seasons was in 1981–82. During that year, he averaged 20.8 points and 11.7 rebounds per game.
In 1987, Thompson was traded to the San Antonio Spurs.

They had other top players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, and James Worthy. All of them were also first overall picks in their drafts.
Thompson became a valuable backup center and power forward for the Lakers. He helped the team win the 1987 NBA title against the Boston Celtics. In Game 6 of the 1987 NBA Finals, he scored 15 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. The Lakers won the series.
Thompson continued to be a reliable player for the Lakers. He helped them win another championship in 1988. They beat the Detroit Pistons that year. The Lakers also reached the NBA Finals in 1989 and 1991. Thompson retired from playing basketball in 1991.
