How It Started

Ladies Learning Code began in 2011. It was started by Heather Payne, Melissa Sariffodeen, Breanna Hughes, and Laura Plant. Their very first workshop was held in Toronto. After that, they started holding workshops every month.

In August 2011, they began to grow across Canada. They opened new groups in Vancouver and over 18 other cities. Since 2011, they have held more than 2,228 learning events. Over 12,425 volunteers have helped with their programs. They also added programs for more people. These include Girls Learning Code, Kids Learning Code, Teens Learning Code, and Teachers Learning Code. Their main office is called The Lab in Toronto.

Who Can Join and What They Learn

Since 2011, Ladies Learning Code has had about 17,500 people join their events. They have held over 600 workshops and courses. This program helps adults learn many tech skills. You can learn about HTML and CSS, which are used to build websites. You can also learn Python and Ruby, which are computer languages. People can also learn how to design websites. They can also learn about online blogging sites like WordPress. These events are open to all adults. You do not need any past experience to join.

Canada Learning Code makes sure there are many helpers. For every four students, there is one volunteer mentor. This means you get lots of personal help and attention. If you need help paying for a course, scholarships are sometimes available.

Programs for Young People

Girls Learning Code started in early 2012. It teaches girls and young people aged 3 to 12 about technology. They learn through workshops, camps, and other fun events. Hundreds of girls in Toronto have joined this program. It is now growing to new cities across Canada.

Teens Learning Code is for older kids. It is for young people aged 13 to 17. This program teaches different tech skills. Teens can learn how to make websites, create games, and even invent apps.

Reaching Across Canada

Canada Learning Code now has over 40 groups across the country. Since 2011, they have taught more than 83,000 learners. In 2017, over 42,700 people joined their workshops. Most of these participants were girls and women. Canada Learning Code wants to reach even more groups. This includes people in small towns, Indigenous communities, and people with disabilities.

In the summer of 2016, Canada Learning Code started the Code Mobile. This is a special initiative to bring coding education to more places.
