Ladislaus III (born around 1200, died May 7, 1205) was a young king who ruled Hungary and Croatia for a short time. He was the only child of King Emeric. Ladislaus became king in 1204 when his father was very sick. King Emeric wanted to make sure his son would become king easily.
Before he died, King Emeric asked his brother, Andrew, to be in charge. Andrew was supposed to look after Ladislaus, who was still a baby. But Duke Andrew did not always do what was best for the young king. Because of this, Ladislaus's mother, Constance of Aragon, took him and left for Austria. Ladislaus died suddenly in Vienna when he was only about five years old.
Early Life and Becoming King (c. 1200–1204)
Ladislaus was the only child of King Emeric and Constance of Aragon. Historians believe he was born around the year 1200. His father, King Emeric, became very ill. To make sure his young son would become king without problems, Emeric ordered Ladislaus to be crowned.
Ladislaus was crowned king on August 26, 1204. This important event happened even though he was just a baby. Archbishop John of Kalocsa performed the coronation. King Emeric also made up with his brother, Andrew. Andrew had been in prison, but Emeric set him free. He then asked Andrew to be the regent for Ladislaus. A regent is someone who rules for a king or queen who is too young to rule alone.
Ladislaus's Short Reign (1204–1205)
King Emeric died on November 30, 1204. This meant Ladislaus officially became the new king. Pope Innocent III, a very important religious leader, sent a letter to Duke Andrew. The Pope told Andrew to protect the young king's interests.
However, Duke Andrew did not listen to the Pope's warning. He took money that King Emeric had saved for Ladislaus. This money was kept at a place called Pilis Abbey. Ladislaus's mother, Queen Constance, worried about her son's safety. She felt that his position as king was not secure.
So, Queen Constance decided to leave Hungary. She took young King Ladislaus with her to Austria. Duke Andrew tried to stop them from leaving. But Constance and Ladislaus managed to reach Vienna, a city in Austria.
Duke Leopold VI of Austria was a cousin to both King Emeric and Duke Andrew. He gave shelter to King Ladislaus and his mother. Duke Andrew even threatened to invade Austria, but Leopold still protected them. Sadly, King Ladislaus died suddenly on May 7, 1205. He was only about five years old. His body was brought back to Székesfehérvár in Hungary. He was buried in the Székesfehérvár Basilica.
