Lady Davina Elizabeth Alice Benedikte Windsor was born on 19 November 1977. She is a member of the British royal family. Her parents are the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. As of 2023, she is 35th in line to become the next British monarch. Between 2004 and 2018, she was known as Lady Davina Lewis, during her marriage to Gary Lewis.
Early Life and School
Davina was born in St Mary's Hospital, London. She was baptised on 19 February 1978. This took place at Barnwell Parish Church. This church was near her family home, Barnwell Manor.
Lady Davina grew up in Kensington Palace. She went to school at Kensington Preparatory School. Later, she attended St George's School, Ascot. She studied media at the University of the West of England.
Marriage and Family
On 31 July 2004, Davina married Gary Christie Lewis. He was born in 1970 and is a Māori person. Gary works as a carpenter. He also runs a business that renovates properties. He loves surfing.
Davina and Gary had known each other for four years. They first met while on holiday in Bali. They kept their relationship a secret for some time. Gary's father, Larry Lewis, was a builder. He was also a runner-up in a sheep-shearing contest. Gary's uncle is Witi Ihimaera, a famous Māori author. He wrote The Whale Rider, which became a movie.
Gary Lewis was the first person of Māori descent to marry into the British royal family. A special rule for royal weddings, called the Royal Marriages Act 1772, said that the Queen had to agree to the marriage. This was important for any children they might have to be in line for the throne. On 20 July 2004, the Queen formally agreed to their marriage.
The wedding happened at Kensington Palace. This was Lady Davina's childhood home. Only close friends and family attended the wedding. Other members of the royal family were not there. Davina and Gary divorced in 2018.
Davina and Gary have two children. Their daughter, Senna Kowhai, was born on 22 June 2010. Their son, Tāne Mahuta, was born on 25 May 2012. Tāne was named after a giant kauri tree in New Zealand. This tree is called Tāne Mahuta. Lady Davina was also a stepmother to Gary's son, Ari, from a past relationship.
A new law, the Succession to the Crown Act 2013, changed the rules for who becomes monarch. Before 2015, sons had priority over daughters. After this law took effect in 2015, daughters born after October 2011 have the same rights as sons. This meant Senna became ahead of her younger brother Tāne in the line of succession. Senna and Tāne are now 28th and 29th in line, respectively.
Lady Davina does not have official royal duties. However, she does attend family events. She and Gary Lewis went to a reception for the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team in 2005. They also attended Prince William's wedding in 2011.
