About Lady Franklin Island

Lady Franklin Island is located off the coast of Baffin Island. It is about 25 miles (40 kilometers) away from a place called Hall Peninsula. The island is quite remote and no one lives there permanently.

Around Lady Franklin Island, especially off its northwest side, there are at least seven smaller islands. These smaller islands do not have official names. The area is known for its rugged and wild Arctic landscape.

Why the Island is Called Lady Franklin

The island was named by an Arctic explorer named Charles Francis Hall. He explored the Arctic regions a long time ago. He named the island to honor a very special woman.

This woman was Lady Franklin. She was the wife of another famous explorer, Sir John Franklin. Sir John Franklin led an expedition that got lost in the Arctic. Lady Franklin spent many years trying to find out what happened to him. Naming the island after her was a way to show respect for her efforts and courage.

Wildlife and Nature

Even though no people live on Lady Franklin Island, it is full of amazing wildlife. The island provides a home for many different animals. These animals are well-adapted to the cold Arctic environment.

You can find many bears on the island. There are also caribou, which are often called tuktoo by the local people. The waters around the island are home to many seals and walrus. Ducks also visit the island, especially during certain times of the year. This makes Lady Franklin Island an important place for Arctic animals.
