Lady Franklin Point facts for kids
Lady Franklin Point is a special piece of land in the Canadian Arctic. It's located in Nunavut, Canada's northernmost territory. You can find it on the southwest side of Victoria Island. It sits by Austin Bay and the Coronation Gulf, right at the entrance to the Dolphin and Union Strait.
No one lives at Lady Franklin Point today. However, it once had an important radar station. This station was part of the North Warning System. Before that, it was part of the Distant Early Warning Line, also known as the DEW Line. These systems were built to help keep an eye on the skies. The site at Lady Franklin Point was called PIN-3. Sadly, on January 10, 2000, this unmanned station caught fire. It was almost completely destroyed.
The point is named after Lady Jane Franklin. She was the wife of a famous Arctic explorer, Sir John Franklin. This area was also historically home to the Nagyuktogmiut. They are a group of Copper Inuit people.
