The painting Lady in a Fur Wrap is an oil painting from the late 1570s. It is believed to have been painted by Alonso Sánchez Coello. You can see this artwork at Pollok House in Glasgow, Scotland.
What the Painting Shows
This painting shows a young woman looking right at you. She is wearing a fancy fur robe over her clothes. A thin, see-through veil covers her head. You can also just make out a necklace she is wearing. The fur on her robe might be from an ermine or a lynx. The background of the painting is dark.
Who Painted It?
No one signed this painting, so for a long time, people thought it was by a famous artist named El Greco. This was because it used to be in the Spanish art collection of French king Louis Philippe I. It even hung in the Louvre museum for a while.
In 1853, a man named Sir William Stirling-Maxwell bought the painting. Later, in 1966, his family gave it to the city of Glasgow, along with Pollok House.
Over time, art experts started to question if El Greco really painted it. Some, like art historian Maria Kusche, thought it might be by a female artist named Sofonisba Anguissola.
After a lot of research by the Museo del Prado, Glasgow Museums, and The University of Glasgow, experts now agree. They believe the painting was actually created by Alonso Sánchez Coello.
Who is the Lady?
We don't know for sure who the woman in the painting is. Because the painting was owned by royalty and the fur and necklace are very valuable, people have made some guesses. Some think she might be someone from the royal family of Philip II of Spain. This is partly because of her "widow's peak" hairline, which was a common feature in portraits of that family.
