Ladysmith used to be part of the Shire of Kyeamba. On January 1, 1981, this area joined with the Shire of Mitchell to become part of the City of Wagga Wagga.
History of Ladysmith
The Railway Line
The old railway line that ran from Wagga Wagga to Tumbarumba goes right through Ladysmith. The Ladysmith railway station is no longer used for trains.
A group called Tumba Rail helps take care of the old railway station. They are working to let people ride special rail trikes in the railway yard on weekends. This would be a fun way to see the area.
Naming the Town
The Ladysmith Post Office first opened on November 20, 1899. Before that, the area was known as Alfredtown.
The community asked for the name to be changed to Ladysmith. They wanted to honor Sarah Ann Smith and her husband, Charles Thomas Smith. The Smith family, who lived at a place called "Green Meadow," did a lot for their community.
Interestingly, another town named Ladysmith is in South Africa. This town was famous for a big battle and a long siege during the Second Boer War in late 1899. Australian soldiers from New South Wales were part of this war at that time.
Recent Changes
