Laflin's Story: A Look Back
Laflin became an official borough in 1889. It was probably named after one of the owners of the Laflin & Rand Powder Company. Just one year later, in 1890, only about 200 people lived in the new borough.
The area saw a big increase in people because of coal mining. Laflin's population grew the most between 1970 and 1980. During this time, the number of residents jumped from 399 to 1,650 people. That's a huge growth of over 300%!
