Laguna sits about 157 feet (48 meters) above the level of the sea. Interestingly, there's another place in Arizona with the same name, but it's found in a different part of the state.
Discovering Laguna, Arizona
Laguna is a unique spot in Arizona, known for its history and location. It's a quiet area that has seen many changes over the years. Its story is tied to the natural resources found nearby.
Laguna's Early Days
The history of Laguna began in the 1850s when people found gold in the area. This discovery of "gold placers" (gold found in riverbeds) attracted many miners. By the 1860s, a small settlement grew into a mining town. This town was built close to the Colorado River and the Laguna Mountains.
Later, a very important structure called the Laguna Diversion Dam was built near Laguna. This dam helps control the water from the Colorado River. During World War II, a large military training area called the U.S. Desert Training Center was set up nearby. One of its camps, Camp Laguna, was named after this community and the mountains.
