Laguna de Maniltepec
The beautiful Laguna de Manialtepec in Oaxaca, Mexico.

The Laguna de Manialtepec is a cool coastal lagoon located about 18 kilometers west of Puerto Escondido in the sunny state of Oaxaca, Mexico. Its name comes from the ancient Náhuatl language. "Manial" means "spring" and "tepec" means "hill," so the name means "Hill where water is born." You can get to this amazing lagoon by car using Federal Highway 200, or you can take a boat ride from Puerto Escondido.

What is the Laguna de Manialtepec?

This long lagoon stretches for about 15 kilometers. It's surrounded by thick jungle plants and special trees called mangroves. Some of these mangroves can grow as tall as 15 meters! During the rainy season, the lagoon connects to the big ocean at a spot called Puerto Suelo or El Carnero. This connection helps keep the lagoon healthy and full of life.

Exploring the Lagoon

Even though you can see some of the plants and animals from the docks in San José Manialtepec, most people like to explore the lagoon up close. They often take a boat or a kayak. This way, you can paddle right next to the banks and see all the amazing wildlife hiding there. It's a great way to experience nature!

Amazing Wildlife

The Laguna de Manialtepec is a busy home for many different animals. Lots of bird species love to nest here. You might spot wild ducks, tall storks, and birds called "tijerillas." The water is also full of fish! Some of the fish you can find include mojarra, sea bass, catfish, and striped mullet. The thick mangroves also provide a safe place for young fish and other creatures to grow.

Glowing Waters: Bioluminescence!

One of the most incredible things about the Laguna de Manialtepec is its glowing water! About four times a year, the lagoon becomes phosphorescent. This happens because of tiny living things called algae that live in the water. When the water moves, these tiny organisms light up! Imagine swimming or paddling at night and seeing streaks of light all around you. It's like magic, caused by the movement of fish and even people in the water. It's a truly unforgettable experience!
