Lah-Toh County, Idaho Territory facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lah-Toh County was a special area, like a district, in Idaho Territory a long time ago. It existed from 1864 to 1867.

What Was Lah-Toh County?

Lah-Toh County was created in 1864 by the government of Idaho Territory. This government was called the Idaho Territorial Legislature. They decided that Coeur d'Alene would be its main town, known as the county seat. A county seat is like the capital city for a county, where the main offices are.

The name "Lah-Toh" comes from the Nez Perce language. It means "the place of pine trees and pestle." A pestle is a tool used for grinding things.

Why Did Lah-Toh County Disappear?

Lah-Toh County didn't last very long. It was officially closed down in 1867. When it was abolished, its land was split up.

The southern part of Lah-Toh County became part of Nez Perce County. The northern part of the county joined Kootenai County. So, the land was divided between two other existing counties.

A New Beginning: Latah County

Even though Lah-Toh County was gone, a new county with a very similar name was created later. In 1888, a county called Latah County was established. This new county had different borders than the old Lah-Toh County.
