Lahaina Gateway is a fun shopping mall in Lahaina, Hawaii. It opened in April 2008. This mall has two floors and lots of shops, covering about 137,000 square feet. Over the years, different companies have owned and managed it. Sometimes, the mall has faced financial challenges, like when a property is taken over because payments weren't made.
You can find popular stores here like Barnes & Noble. It also has Lahaina's Department of Motor Vehicles offices. There's even a Foodland Farms grocery store. The mall's design is inspired by traditional Hawaiian architecture. Some buildings have cool stucco decorations.
How Lahaina Gateway Started
Lahaina Gateway opened its doors in April 2008. It quickly became the biggest shopping center in western Maui. Western Partitions, Inc. developed the mall. Kiewit Construction helped build it.
It took about 13 months to build the mall. The shopping area covers about 11 acres. In 2011, a company called TNP Strategic Trust bought the mall. This happened after the mall had faced financial issues. Even with these challenges, new stores were still interested in joining.
In 2012, the mall faced financial issues again. Strategic Retail Trust then bought it. Today, The Festival Companies manages Lahaina Gateway.
Fun Events at the Mall
Lahaina Gateway often hosts exciting events. Every Sunday, there's a Maui Gift and Craft Fair. It runs from 9 AM to 2 PM.
The mall also has special events and fundraisers. Every October, they celebrate Pineapples & Pumpkins. This is a fun Halloween festival. In March 2015, they even had a classic car show. The annual Wiki Wiki Run also takes place near the shopping center.
Stores and Design
The design of Lahaina Gateway looks like traditional Hawaiian towns. It has several buildings. Some look like old "plantation style" homes. Others have a more modern feel. Many buildings have stucco on their outside walls.
The main store at Lahaina Gateway is Foodland Farms. This grocery store sells organic foods. It also offers foods and drinks grown right on Maui.
Other shops include Passion 4 Fashion Boutique, which sells women's clothing. You can also find the largest Barnes & Noble bookstore in Hawaii here. Lahaina's official Department of Motor Vehicles offices are also located at the mall.
In 2015, a cultural center called Na Lio Maui was at the mall for a short time. It taught visitors about the history of horses in Hawaiian culture.
