Laia Costa was born on February 18, 1985, in Barcelona, Spain. Her father, José María Costa, was an accountant. Her mother, Cristina Bertrán, was one of Barcelona's first female taxi drivers. Laia grew up in the Horta area of Barcelona. She is the older of two sisters. Her younger sister, Noemí Costa, is also an actress.
Laia says she became an actress by accident. She never thought about acting when she was young. She played basketball for 17 years, starting at a young age. She played as a point guard for the Hispano Francés sports club. Laia feels that sports taught her many important values, like teamwork.
She earned a degree in advertising, public relations, and marketing. After college, she worked for marketing companies. She had more free time and decided to take acting classes with her sister.
