Laia Costa Bertrán (born February 18, 1985) is a talented Spanish actress. She has worked in many countries, including Spain, Russia, Germany, and the United States. Laia has won several important awards, like a Goya Award and two Platino Awards. She was also nominated for a BAFTA Award.

Before becoming an actress, Laia studied advertising and political science. She started acting at age 26. She first had small roles on Spanish TV. Then, she became famous worldwide for her main role in the German movie Victoria (2015). This movie was special because it was filmed in one continuous shot! For her role, Laia won the Best Actress award at the German Film Awards. She was the first non-German and only Spanish actress to win this award. Later, she starred in movies like Newness (2017), Only You (2018), and Duck Butter (2018).

Laia also starred in the HBO Spain series Foodie Love (2019). She was also in the TV shows Devils (2020) and Soulmates (2020). Early Life and Education

Laia Costa was born on February 18, 1985, in Barcelona, Spain. Her father, José María Costa, was an accountant. Her mother, Cristina Bertrán, was one of Barcelona's first female taxi drivers. Laia grew up in the Horta area of Barcelona. She is the older of two sisters. Her younger sister, Noemí Costa, is also an actress.

Laia says she became an actress by accident. She never thought about acting when she was young. She played basketball for 17 years, starting at a young age. She played as a point guard for the Hispano Francés sports club. Laia feels that sports taught her many important values, like teamwork.

She earned a degree in advertising, public relations, and marketing. After college, she worked for marketing companies. She had more free time and decided to take acting classes with her sister.

Laia took many acting courses. She also took an "Acting in English" course for two years. She can speak Catalan, Spanish, French, and English very well.

Early Work and International Success (2011-2020)

Laia Costa first appeared in a music video in 2010. Her TV debut was in the 2011 series Bandolera. She also had a small role in the 2012 movie I Want You.

In 2013, Laia starred as Rym in the TV show Polseres vermelles. Rym was a girl with cancer. This show won an International Emmy Award. Later that year, Laia performed in her first professional play. It was called Atraco, paliza y muerte en Agbanäspach. She had to learn her lines in German for this play.

In 2014, she starred in the Russian film Fort Ross. This was her first international movie role. The same year, she was in the TV series Cuéntame un cuento. It was a modern version of the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood.

Laia became very famous for her role in the 2015 movie Victoria. This crime thriller was filmed in one continuous shot, which means no cuts! The New York Times called her performance a "Breakthrough Performance." She won the German Film Award for Best Actress for this role. She also won the Gaudí Award and the Sant Jordi Award.

In 2022, Laia's movie Lullaby premiered at the Berlinale. She received the script for Lullaby when she was pregnant in 2019. Playing a new mother in the film felt very real to her own life. For her role as Amaia, she won many awards. These included the Goya Award for Best Actress and the Platino Award for Best Actress.

In 2023, Laia was in the British TV series The Diplomat. She also starred in the Spanish film The Enchanted. She returned to her role as Paula in the TV series Cites Barcelona. Laia also took the main role in the movie Un amor. For this film, she won her second Platino Award for Best Actress.

Laia also played Moghedien in the Amazon Video series The Wheel of Time. Her character first appeared in the second season. In February 2024, Forbes Women named Laia one of the 50 most influential women in Spanish cinema.

Personal Life

Laia Costa lived in Brickell, Miami, Florida, for six years. She moved there with her husband, David López, because of his job. She met David when they were in college.

In May 2020, Laia gave birth to her first child, a girl. In early 2024, she had a boy.
