Portisch played his first Candidates match in 1965 but lost to Mikhail Tal. He qualified again in 1967 but lost to Bent Larsen in 1968. He kept trying and qualified many more times. In 1977, he reached the semi-finals of the Candidates matches after beating Bent Larsen. However, he then lost to Boris Spassky.

In 1980, Portisch got his revenge against Spassky. They tied their match, but Portisch moved on because he had more wins with the Black pieces. He then lost in the semi-finals. He continued to play in the World Championship cycle for many years, showing his dedication to chess.
