Location and Size
Lake Albert is found right in the middle of Africa. It is the most northern lake in a series of lakes that form the "Albertine Rift." This rift is the western part of the huge East African Rift.
The lake is about 160 kilometers (100 miles) long and 30 kilometers (19 miles) wide. At its deepest point, it goes down 51 meters (167 feet). The surface of Lake Albert is 619 meters (2,031 feet) above sea level.
Part of the Nile River System
Lake Albert is an important part of the upper Nile River system. Water flows into Lake Albert from two main sources. One is Lake Victoria to the southeast. The other is Lake Edward to the southwest.
The water then leaves Lake Albert from its northern end. This outflow forms the Albert Nile. The Albert Nile then flows north and becomes the White Nile when it enters South Sudan. This shows how connected the lakes and rivers are in this region.
Surrounding Landscape
The area around Lake Albert is quite diverse. At the southern end of the lake, you will find large swamps. Further south, there is a tall mountain range called the Ruwenzori Range.
On the northwestern side of the lake, a range of hills known as the Blue Mountains rise high above the shore. These features add to the natural beauty of the region around Lake Albert.
A Bit of History
In the past, European explorers and colonialists used Lake Albert for shipping. The British had plans to use ships on Lake Albert as part of a big transport network. This network included railway lines, riverboats, and lake steamers. The goal was to connect British interests across Egypt, east Africa, and southern Africa.
