Lake Carasaljo is a beautiful, man-made lake located right in the center of Lakewood Township, New Jersey. It was created a long time ago, in the mid-1700s. People built a dam on the South Branch of the Metedeconk River to make the lake. This dam helped power a sawmill, which was a factory that cut wood. The mill was known as Three Partners Mill.

The Story Behind the Name

Lake Carasaljo received its unique name in 1865. This was around the same time the town's name changed from Bergen Iron Works to Bricksburg.

Naming After Daughters

The lake is named after the three daughters of Joseph Woolston Brick. He was the owner of the Bergen Iron Works. You might recognize his last name because Brick Township, New Jersey is also named after him! His daughters' names were Caroline, Sarah, and Josephine.

  • Caroline was often called 'Carrie'.
  • Sarah was nicknamed 'Sally'.
  • Josephine was known as 'Jo'.

If you put parts of their nicknames together – Car-a-sal-jo – you get the lake's name!

Sister Lake: Lake Manetta

Lake Carasaljo has a sister lake called Lake Manetta. This lake was also created by building a dam, but it happened later, in 1816. Lake Manetta is named after Joseph Woolston Brick's wife, Manetta. It was formed when the Watering Place Branch of the river was dammed.

Other Nearby Lakes

Another man-made lake in the area is Lake Shenandoah. It is also located along a branch of the Metedeconk River. Lake Shenandoah is part of the Ocean County, New Jersey Department of Parks and Recreation. It's a great spot for outdoor activities.

What's Around Lake Carasaljo?

Georgian Court University is a college located right on the northern shore of Lake Carasaljo. This university is built on what used to be a large estate owned by a famous person named George Jay Gould I.

The lake has roads running along its sides. North Lake Drive is on the northern side, and South Lake Drive is on the southern side. On the eastern side, you'll find U.S. Route 9, which is also known as River Road. The Central Avenue Bridge separates Lake Carasaljo from its sister lake, Lake Manetta.
