Lake Charles State Park is a beautiful park in Lawrence County, Arkansas, in the United States. It covers about 140 acres. The park is located in The Ozarks near the Black River.

A big part of the park is the 645-acre artificial Lake Charles. This lake was created by several groups working together. Their goal was to help control floods and protect the water in the area. Building the lake started in 1964, and the park officially opened in 1967.

How Lake Charles State Park Began

The idea for a lake in this area started way back in 1954. The Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District Board wanted to protect the watershed. They also wanted to stop flooding further downstream.

They asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture for help. A new law, the Small Watershed Act, was passed around this time. This law allowed for projects that also helped fish and wildlife.

The plans for Lake Charles were updated. The lake would now supply fresh water to the Shirey Bay Rainey Brake Wildlife Management Area. This was especially important during hot summer months. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) manages all wildlife areas in Arkansas. They became strong supporters of building Lake Charles.

Local people also helped a lot. They formed a group called the Flat Creek Watershed Improvement District. This group got a loan to help pay for the project. The Publicity and Parks Commission promised to take care of the lake as Lake Charles State Park. Construction began in 1964. The park was officially opened on May 28, 1967.
