Lake Dulverton is a shallow lake or lagoon in Tasmania, Australia. It is about 230 to 233 hectares in size. You can find it right next to the town of Oatlands. This area is known as the Southern Midlands region.

Exploring Lake Dulverton's Features

Lake Dulverton has a shoreline that isn't smooth. It has many low cliffs and rocky overhangs made of sandstone. The only island in the lake is called Mary's Island. It's a small sandstone rock, about 80 meters long. A few cedar trees grow on this island.

When the Lake Dried Up

In 1993, something unusual happened: Lake Dulverton completely dried up. It stayed dry for many years. Then, in August 2010, heavy rains finally filled the lake almost to its full level again.

During the time the lake was dry, two walls, called levees, were built across it. These levees divided the lake into three separate parts. Only the smallest section, which is near the Callington Mill, was able to stay full of water during the dry period.

What's Under the Water?

The bottom of Lake Dulverton is made up of peaty soil, rocks, and sand. When the lake is full, its waters quickly become home to lots of pondweed. Many different kinds of waterbirds also come to live there. The lake is an important part of a wildlife sanctuary. This means it's a safe place for animals to live and grow.
